A Gift by Silvia Anton

A Gift

My name represents me in every single way. My parents chose it because of its meaning. My name means jungle, but it is not just a word. My name also means nature like trees, fresh like water, green like plants, wild like the animals in the forest, and that is not all of it. My father grew up in a town in the mountains, so my name is part of that.
I don’t have a middle name because my father forgot to tell it to the officer. I’m glad he forgot to say the word Benita. In that case, I would have to change it. My grandmother’s name was Benita. It is a very old name, and was a good name for her at that time, but not for me. I want to believe that mistake was not a coincidence and the excitement of my father that day is a gift for my whole life.

I don’t have a nickname because I don’t need one; I would if my parents had called me Mireia. That was their first idea. They also contemplated  Mercedes, because I was born close to the holiday “La Merce”, and a long time ago in Spain was very typical.  My grandmother chose my mom’s name because a holiday called “El Pilar”.  At the end, my parents made the right decision and I will thank them for my whole life.
