A Native by Kaydan Pascual
A Native
I have been trying to understand from a young age where did I get my name from and what culture it derived from. A name from a different culture would indicate its true meaning and great significance that holds between my ancestors and the future generations.
It all started with my great ,great , grandfather ,the late Martin Martinez , who had lived with godparents and took their last name , Pascual . Hence , the reason my last name is Pascual. My great , great grandfather , Martin was a Garifuna . Garifuna is the descendant of Red Carib , Arawak Indians , and Africans . These Africans were shipwrecked in the Caribbean , and didn't made it to slavery.
My first name is Kaydan Pascual . It is an Arabic word which means companion . The surname Pascual means Easter or Passover . Nevertheless , the surname was passed on from my great , great grandfather ,the late Victor Pascual , to my father John Pascual , and then to me Kaydan Pascual . I am a person of mixed cultures ; I am part of creole which is from my mother who is the descendant of African and European and Garifuna from my father. All the men hold their surnames ; however the women change their surname due to matrimonial. This makes me have an extended family with the following name ; Martinez , Castillo , Ramos , and many others just to name a few .
In conclusion , that rare name with a different culture made me realize who I am today . Because of my ancestors , it made me understand the great significance of why I am here . I speak with great dignity about the richness and dynamic culture that I am apart of and the importance of a name , and a different culture within its own right that is different .
